JOB SUMMARYYou will lead a team of trade compliance and customs experts responsible for delivering high‑value advisory services to clients across diverse industries. This role oversees the development and execution of consulting engagements related to customs compliance, import/export strategy, duty optimization, risk mitigation, and regulatory adherence. The Director partners closely with clients to assess their global trade operations, identify compliance gaps, design process improvements, and implement solutions that enhance efficiency and reduce exposure. This position also plays a key role in business development by shaping proposals, supporting sales teams, and expanding Livingston’s consulting footprint in the market. The ideal candidate has deep customs and trade knowledge, with the ability to translate complex regulations into actionable client strategies. They also need to be a true people person who communicates with ease, and thrives in team-driven environments.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills, including oral, written and presentation skills.
  • Superior organizational and planning skills.
  • Superior management skills including forecasting/budgeting abilities, analysis, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of regulations as they relate to the unit’s activities, i.e. customs, taxation, etc.
  • 8 years of progressive experience
  • High School/GED or equivalent

Responsibilities

  • Directs and manages all aspects of the customs consulting unit including service, operations, billing, accounts receivable, claims and all administrative functions.
  • Develops strategic tactics which will enable the unit to achieve its budgeted objectives.
  • Responsible for evaluating and developing new markets and services with the potential for growth for the unit.
  • Develops and controls budgets and forecasts for the unit, ensuring the unit achieves its targeted operating contribution.  Provides reports to senior management for the unit on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, or as required.
  • Responsible for recruiting, training, disciplining, dismissing, etc. for all staff in the unit.  This includes both permanent full-time employees as well as contractors hired for consulting work.
  • Promotes and supports corporate policies and visions, and communicates corporate programs and projects to the staff in the unit.
  • Liaises with various governmental bodies and agencies  impacting on the unit’s services in order to ensure Livingston’s interests are represented.
  • Develops and presents proposals on the services of the Customs Consulting unit to both Livingston and non-Livingston clients.
  • Assists the marketing department with the development of brochures and advertising materials.
  • Coordinates with the Director, Client Service the handling of client issues as to whether our contingency consulting isolated and error on the part of Livingston, negotiating payment of the fees or writing off.
  • Communicates/trains the client service teams where they have overlooked issues identified by the consulting unit.
  • Oversees the administrative functions in the unit, including billing and accounts receivable.
  • Keeps abreast of regulatory changes as they relate to the unit including compliance, NAFTA, tariffs, drawback requirements, GST, taxation on imports, etc.
  • Hosts and participates at various Livingston social and business activities, projecting a professional image on behalf of the company.
