About The Position

As a Director of Commissioning Services you will lead, mentor and grow a team of highly skilled controls & test engineers who will startup state of the art systems to be deployed with an edge in speed, innovation, operator experience, and a willingness to take on ambitious automation challenges. You and your team will be responsible for the implementation of company standards and frameworks to create controls applications specific for equipment used in production verticals. Your team will provide guidance and support to our suppliers from the design phase through the start of production with thorough review of their work and coordination and documentation of acceptance tests during buyoff at the suppliers’ site and after completion of commissioning. Working in synergy with suppliers and contractors, you will ensure that data propagation between components for production tracking, manufacturing systems, and diagnostics are established and validated. You will troubleshoot problems in the factory and partner with cross functional leadership across the enterprise to solve automation related challenges. Remote, travel-based position 75%. The individual in this role will be expected to travel to and work on-site at the project they are managing. Candidates must be located in the Central or Western time zones to ensure effective collaboration with on-site and cross-functional teams. The commissioning team plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful deployment of robotic systems. They are responsible for overseeing the beginning and final stages of system integration, testing, and optimization before the automation solution is put into operation. This team works closely with engineers and technicians to fine-tune robotics and automation systems, ensuring they meet performance standards, safety regulations, and customer requirements. Their expertise in troubleshooting, calibration, and quality control helps Symbotic deliver efficient and reliable robotic solutions to clients across various industries.

Requirements

  • Remote, travel-based position 75%. The individual in this role will be expected to travel to and work on-site at the project they are managing. Candidates must be located in the Central or Western time zones to ensure effective collaboration with on-site and cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (e.g., Controls & Computer Control Systems, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering) or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience managing large teams, including internal staff, contractors, and suppliers, overseeing automation projects from concept to production.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience as a controls engineer designing, implementing, and optimizing automation solutions.
  • Experience programming industrial 6-axis robots (Fanuc, Kawasaki, ABB, Kuka, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of distributed data systems and their trade-offs.
  • Familiarity with common controls hardware used in high-volume manufacturing.
  • Expertise in modular, reusable PLC programming (Rockwell, Beckhoff, Siemens, or similar).
  • Experience designing HMIs using platforms such as Ignition, FactoryTalk View, WinCC, Wonderware, or TwinCAT HMI.
  • Proficiency in developing and interpreting electrical schematics using AutoCAD Electrical or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA) and industrial electrical standards (NFPA79, NEC, UL508A).

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in automotive manufacturing processes (e.g., stamping, general assembly).
  • Knowledge of machine PLC communication with relational databases.
  • Experience developing machine vision applications (Keyence, Cognex, Halcon, etc.).
  • Expertise in integrating manufacturing equipment with factory software systems (MES, data collection).
  • Experience designing and implementing industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, Profinet).

Responsibilities

  • Lead a high-performing team, fostering a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, and quality.
  • Develop and implement commissioning, systems integration, test standards, best practices, and audit processes for new and existing systems.
  • Define key metrics and KPIs to drive data-informed decision-making and clearly communicate strategic insights.
  • Collaborate with the project execution team to propose and implement new strategies that enhance deployment efficiency and reduce cost
  • Deploy high-performance software and robotics solutions with a focus on safety, scalability, and best practices.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts in customer environments and collaborate cross-functionally to resolve automation challenges.
