About The Position

As Director, Commercial Data Operations in AbbVie's Analytics and Performance Excellence (APEX) organization, you will provide visionary leadership and strategic oversight to the commercial data ecosystem, driving excellence in data operations, governance, product innovation, and business impact. You will lead cross-functional teams to deliver on ambitious transformation objectives—accelerating AI capabilities through AI-ready data foundations, enhancing data quality, and operationalizing enterprise-class commercial data solutions for analytics, business intelligence, and strategic decision-making across US Commercial, Patient Services, and related domains.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field).
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in commercial data operations, data management, analytics, and strategy; 8+ years in pharmaceutical/life sciences industry with 5+ years management/technical leadership.
  • Proven experience in deploying data platforms and governance at scale—ideally supporting both commercial and medical business units.
  • Deep hands-on knowledge of technical tools: SQL, Snowflake, Power BI, Python, ETL pipelines, cloud platforms, and data catalog technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead transformational change, manage large budgets, and influence senior/executive stakeholders.
  • Expertise in compliance, privacy, security, and regulations related to commercial health data.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Data Operations Leadership
  • Develop and execute end-to-end data strategies in syndicated Rx/Sales and Claims domains, harmonizing and scaling data assets to maximize value, compliance, and agility for business stakeholders.
  • Accountable for timely, on-budget delivery of high-quality data products (claims, Rx, sales, syndicated data, consumption layers), ensuring alignment with commercial milestones, budget owner requirements, and APEX objectives.
  • Lead and manage annual budgets for data and cloud compute; prioritize investments and resource allocation to support evolving business needs and innovation goals.
  • Deliver transformative data products and metadata enhancements to support GenAI, machine learning, NLP, and chatbot capabilities.
  • Data Quality, Governance, & Issue Management
  • Champion enterprise data governance frameworks to ensure integrity, transparency, stewardship, and trustworthiness of commercial data assets.
  • Lead requirements definition and operationalization of advanced DQM models and dashboards for proactive issue identification, anomaly detection, and problem management across assigned domains (Rx/sales, claims).
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that reduce material restatements, enhance metadata capture, and improve overall data reliability.
  • Vendor Management & Data Acquisition
  • Evaluate, select, and manage relationships with major syndicated data vendors (e.g., IQVIA, SHA, Concert AI, Cognizant), overseeing contract negotiations, onboarding, product news communication, and compliance with data standards.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders and purchasing teams for smooth acquisition, integration, and budgeting of new data assets—ensuring timely delivery to consumption environments in alignment with business priorities.
  • Change Management & Talent Development
  • Foster a data-driven, continuous improvement culture—championing innovation, adoption of new tools, streamlined processes, and best-in-class operational practices.
  • Recruit, develop, coach, and retain top data talent
  • Cultivate psychological safety, empowered leadership, and inclusion
  • Partner cross-functionally with APEX Franchise Analytics, Business Technology Solutions, Finance, Analytics Products, MDM, Patient Services, and field operations to ensure effective collaboration, data stewardship, and business impact.
