About The Position

The Director and Attending Veterinarian at Loyola University Chicago is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the veterinary care of all vertebrate animal species utilized in research at the university. This position entails directing and delegating veterinary care, ensuring compliance with university policies, state and federal laws, and industry standards related to animal care. The Director will provide operational management and strategic planning for animal use and care facilities, ensuring that all aspects of animal care are conducted in accordance with the highest standards of quality and compliance. As the campus Attending Veterinarian, the individual will offer clinical and diagnostic support for laboratory animals, serving as a subject matter expert on internal and external committees related to the responsible use of vertebrate animals in research. The Director will also oversee the development and implementation of training programs for faculty, staff, and students to ensure that their research involving vertebrate animals adheres to established quality and compliance standards. In addition to providing veterinary expertise for animal protocol development and advising principal investigators on experimental design, the Director will participate in veterinary reviews of all new and renewal protocols. This role includes supervising the performance of all staff and faculty supporting the operations of the Comparative Medicine Facility (CMF) and Animal Care Facility (ACF), with responsibilities that encompass hiring, performance evaluations, and addressing grievances. The Director will serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) and the Institutional Biosafety Committee, advising on biohazard control policies relevant to the animal care program. Participation in semi-annual IACUC inspections and drafting or reviewing regulatory documents for compliance with applicable regulations is also a key responsibility. The Director will provide strategic advice to the Vice Provost for Research regarding the operation of the facility and contribute to the development of the Strategic Plan for the vertebrate animal facility/program at Loyola University Chicago. Additionally, the Director will serve as the Attending Veterinarian for the Hines VA with a 0.15 FTE effort.
