About the position

The Director and Assistant or Associate Professor of Mining Engineering Technology is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at Bluefield State University, anticipated to begin in Fall Semester 2025. The role involves teaching lower and upper-level college courses, supervising laboratory experiences, and collaborating with the mining industry to enhance educational offerings and student training opportunities. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching and a commitment to student success, while also engaging in program development and academic advising.

Responsibilities

  • Plan classes and work closely with the Mining Industry to stay current with changes.
  • Work with the Mining Industry to plan internships and lab training for students.
  • Maintain a minimum teaching load of 12 credits, which may include web-based or interactive video instruction.
  • Provide academic advising and participate in school committees and College governance.
  • Take a supportive interest in the academic progress of each student.
  • Maintain adequate office hours for student conferences.
  • Participate in the faculty-student advisory program.
  • Keep abreast of academic discipline through continuing study and professional organization participation.
  • Continuously strive to improve teaching effectiveness.
  • Keep accurate records of grades and other required information.
  • Attend all faculty meetings and participate in university events.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required, preferably in Mining Engineering or Mining Engineering Technology.
  • Ability to effectively use alternative teaching modalities (e.g., online, video livestreaming, Moodle).
  • Experience in management-related roles in mining Engineering Technology and Mining Industry.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior classroom and lab teaching experience.
  • Professional certifications (e.g., Professional Engineering Certification, OSHA/MSHA, State Safety Certification).
  • Experience in applied research with business, industry, or government agencies.
  • Prior administrative experience in higher education.
  • Experience across multiple fields (e.g., mining, electrical, mechanical, industrial) and ability to teach across disciplines.
