Role Summary We are seeking a Director of AI Engineering to lead and scale a high-impact team responsible for building and evolving AI-powered products that serve millions of users. This leader will guide a team of senior and principal-level engineers across backend, and front-end disciplines, establishing the technical strategy and engineering standards that enable the team to reliably deliver and continuously enhance production AI systems. You will strengthen delivery practices, deepen cross-functional partnerships, and expand our AI capabilities to ensure solutions remain secure, scalable, and impactful as adoption grows. This role combines organizational leadership, strong product partnership, and deep technical credibility. You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with Product and lead a team of highly senior AI engineers to define roadmaps, shape technical direction, and deliver meaningful customer outcomes through reliable, production-ready solutions. If you enjoy building structure where there’s ambiguity, leading highly skilled engineers, and scaling complex production systems, this role is for you.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with 5+ years experience in engineering leadership roles
  • Experience leading senior or principal-level engineers in backend or platform-focused teams
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems, APIs, and cloud-native services at scale
  • Experience delivering and supporting production systems with high reliability, observability, and testing standards
  • Proven ability to partner closely with Product to define roadmaps and drive execution
  • Experience establishing team processes, engineering standards, and delivery practices
  • Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production applications (e.g., APIs, tool usage, orchestration)

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background in Node.js/TypeScript or similar modern backend stacks
  • Experience leading teams building AI-powered or LLM-enabled products
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering, tool/function calling, or AI orchestration patterns
  • Experience with AWS and modern DevOps practices (Docker, CI/CD, observability, feature flags)
  • Experience with event-driven or service-oriented architectures
  • Experience building internal platforms or shared engineering capabilities
  • Experience in healthcare or regulated environments
  • Experience scaling teams in rapidly evolving technical domains

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of senior and principal AI, backend, and front-end engineers
  • Define technical strategy, roadmaps, and priorities in partnership with Product
  • Establish standards and processes that enable consistent, predictable delivery
  • Scale and enhance production AI systems to improve reliability, performance, and impact
  • Hire and develop top-tier engineering talent
  • Ensure solutions meet security, compliance, and responsible AI expectations
  • Represent the team in cross-functional and leadership forums
