About The Position

The Director of the African American Museum of Southern Arizona (AAMSAZ) is a leadership role focused on community engagement, fundraising, and the sustainability of the museum. This position is responsible for overseeing daily operations, managing partnerships, and driving revenue growth while ensuring the museum's mission of preserving and sharing African American history is fulfilled. The director will work closely with the Board of Directors to implement strategic plans and will serve as the primary representative of the museum in the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Experience working in a multicultural setting and possessing high cultural competency.
  • 3+ years of nonprofit leadership and management experience.
  • Experience working in a museum or museum history.
  • Experience with curating exhibits.
  • Experience with educating and/or developing and implementing educational programming in a K-16 environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily operations of the museum and manage the organization within the annual operating budget.
  • Establish clear expectations and provide oversight and guidance for staff and volunteers.
  • Manage partnerships with municipalities, community partners, and other key constituents.
  • Develop effective systems and processes to strengthen programmatic, fundraising, financial, and administrative operations.
  • Maintain a strong sense of teamwork and foster a positive working environment.
  • Identify and mitigate organizational risk.
  • Collect data to analyze and provide strategy for effectiveness to the Board.
  • Drive fundraising and revenue growth in partnership with the community and university.
  • Implement the annual fundraising plan to support financial sustainability and growth.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and recognize donors, volunteers, and partners.
  • Deliver compelling communications to increase understanding of the museum's vision and mission.
  • Identify new grant opportunities, write proposals, and submit timely reports.
  • Design educational programming based on exhibitions for K-12 and educate visitors.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement a multi-year strategic plan.
