About The Position

The Director, Accounting serves as a senior accountant playing a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial transactions, reporting, and compliance activities. They are the “right hand” to UWNYC’s Controller and work closely with the rest of the Finance team, transacting various accounting functions including: general ledger maintenance, accounts receivable, journal entries, reconciliations, data analysis, and audit support.

Requirements

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting. CPA is a plus.
  • Minimum of five years relevant work experience in accounting and/or auditing. Eight to ten years preferred.
  • Transactional experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, g/l accounting.
  • Payroll processing experience is highly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in Financial Edge NXT is required.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Excel; advanced skills (pivot, VLOOKUP) strongly preferred.
  • Previous non-profit industry experience preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interface with various levels of management.
  • Must be detail-oriented and be able to work in a meticulous, thorough, and precise manner.
  • Must possess the ability to assume non-routine tasks and to take initiative where appropriate.
  • Must possess a strong follow-through on all projects; ability to bring projects to timely completion.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare the payroll journal entry using ADP raw data; record same in the G/L.
  • Record other monthly and periodic journal entries – reclasses, adjustments, investment income.
  • Review, edit, and post revenue entries from the fundraising CRM subledger.
  • Reconcile the bank account(s) inside the financial management software.
  • Reconcile credit card transactions exported from Concur software; ensure proper recording in the G/L.
  • Monitor and update payroll labor distributions inside ADP, ensuring proper cost allocation.
  • Maintain the fixed assets schedule; calculate depreciation/amortization as per guidelines.
  • Maintain the restricted net assets schedule; ensure balances match published financial statements.
  • Monitor and update the G/L architecture – accounts, departments, cost centers, business units, etc.
  • Review the accuracy of, and correct as needed, monthly and annual financial statements produced by the financial management software.
  • Assist with the year-end close and the annual audit – schedules, test work, supporting documentation.
  • Assist in preparation of the annual Form 990 tax return – supporting documentation, questionnaires.
  • Build custom reports inside the cloud-based financial management software.
  • Deposit physical checks arriving at the lockbox or at headquarters.
  • Serve as backup for the accounts payable function.
  • Serve as backup for the execution of the semi-monthly payroll.
  • Support the Controller during ad hoc projects.
