About The Position

The Director of Academic Affairs at the University of Chicago is responsible for managing the academic appointment processes for faculty and other academic personnel within the Division of the Humanities. This role involves overseeing the lifecycle events of academic appointees, including recruitment, promotion, and termination, while ensuring compliance with university policies. The Director also supervises staff, advises on academic personnel matters, and contributes to strategic planning and development initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher in a related field.
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience in academic affairs or university administration.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with HRIS platforms, preferably Workday.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Advanced degree in a Humanistic field.
  • Experience in a relevant role within a complex research university environment.
  • Background in training others and managing staff.
  • Familiarity with the academic appointment process in higher education.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure procedural and substantive integrity of academic personnel management.
  • Oversee employment processes for career and non-career track academic appointees.
  • Advise the Associate Dean and Dean on academic personnel matters.
  • Draft memos on behalf of senior academic leaders.
  • Supervise the Assistant Director and Academic Affairs Administrator.
  • Develop and maintain best practices and process documentation.
  • Advise faculty and staff on policies related to the SEIU Local 73 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Conduct research and contribute to strategic planning for faculty development.
  • Prepare and present analyses, reports, and marketing materials.
  • Participate in various committees and contribute to collaborative projects.
