About The Position

The Director of Operations and Outreach (DOO) at the new Institute for engineering in medicine and healthcare innovation is responsible for leading the strategic business management and tactical operations of the institute. This role involves innovating, implementing, and enhancing the institute's programs to ensure excellence, while managing current initiatives and long-term planning in support of the center's education, research, and outreach mission. The DOO will foster collaboration within the institute and with external partners, oversee evaluations, and help build industry and clinical partnerships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity with exposure to budgets, finance, grant administration, and human resources.
  • 5+ years of management experience with progressively larger responsibilities.
  • Interest in the business of higher education and research.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or similar software.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Business Administration or a PhD in a relevant science, technology, or engineering discipline.
  • Previous management experience in a university environment.
  • Experience in grant functions including proposal development and award management.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the vision, mission, and operating principles of the institute.
  • Create and maintain the infrastructure operating plan and process for efficient operations and compliance.
  • Orchestrate and coordinate activities across departments to support the institute's operations and research programs.
  • Determine staff organization structure and supervise recruitment, hiring, training, and performance management of administrative staff.
  • Manage capital and operating budget planning, purchasing, payroll expenditures, and regular reconciliation and reporting.
  • Manage administrative aspects of space planning and resource deployment.
  • Work with the Director and leadership team to support the institute's growth and expand relationships.
  • Interact with faculty, administration, and funding agencies to ensure smooth execution of initiatives.
  • Serve as liaison to Northwestern's upper administration and engage partners at other universities.
  • Initiate and nurture communication with faculty directors, executive committee, advisory board, and sponsors.
  • Assist the Director in preparing reports, analyses, financial statements, and presentations.
  • Manage and implement strategic operation plans and recommend changes to meet organizational needs.
  • Oversee existing programs and develop new programs, coordinating outreach activities.
  • Provide high-level research administration and oversee a complex sponsored research portfolio.
  • Oversee submission processes and facilitate proposal submissions in collaboration with external partners.
  • Manage ongoing administrative relationships with funding agencies and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
