About The Position

Alternatives, Inc. in Hillsborough, NJ is seeking a part-time asleep overnight Direct Support Professional (DSP) / Caregiver to support adults with developmental disabilities. For over 40 years, Alternatives, Inc. has been dedicated to providing comprehensive support services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as those with mental illnesses. These services include residential, behavior support, employment, support coordination, and recreation. The organization's mission is to enable clients to achieve their highest level of independence and integration into the community through a person-centered philosophy. Alternatives, Inc. has experienced significant growth, expanding its coverage area to include Warren, Hunterdon, Morris, Union, Middlesex, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. In this role, a Direct Support Professional (DSP) / Caregiver is responsible for helping adults with developmental disabilities live their best lives as independently as possible, ensuring their comfort and safety. This involves assisting residents in a residential group home with activities of daily living such as administering medication, cooking meals, performing personal hygiene, and providing transportation to medical appointments. The DSP also assists in implementing individual behavioral plans, teaching new skills, and helping clients achieve their goals using effective teaching and mentoring techniques. Additionally, the role includes encouraging clients' interests and driving them to community outings and recreational activities, while conscientiously reporting any health and safety concerns and maintaining accurate, up-to-date documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Ability to pass criminal/registry background checks and a drug screen
  • Clear tuberculosis (TB) screening
  • Ability to pass and maintain required trainings such as CPR/first aid, medication administration, and positive behavioral support training
  • Basic computer skills
  • Compassionate
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
  • Want to make a difference

Responsibilities

  • Support adults with developmental disabilities to live their best lives as independently as possible
  • Ensure the comfort and safety of each client
