The Direct Support Professional is responsible for teaching basic daily living and social skills to clients residing in Chapel Haven Residential Program. This role plays a crucial part in coordinating and delivering the social communicative competence curriculum, ensuring clients develop essential life skills for greater independence. The Direct Support Professional is essential in fostering an environment where residents can develop the skills needed for a more independent and fulfilling life.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field OR 4 or more years’ experience working with individuals who are learning disabled.
  • Able to obtain State of Connecticut Medication Administration Certification.
  • Valid CT driver’s license.
  • Able to obtain a Public Service License.
  • Work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Excellent communication and observation skills.
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching client’s good nutrition habits, meal planning, seafood storage, meal preparation, and proper use of kitchen equipment (e.g., stove, microwave, George Foreman grill).
  • Teaching clients apartment maintenance skills, including maintaining a clean and organized living space, proper use of cleaning products, and in-home safety practices.
  • Teaching personal hygiene and grooming skills, such as showering, shaving, hair care, brushing teeth, and scheduling personal care appointments.
  • Providing instruction on laundry tasks, including task analysis and the use of a laundry checklist.
  • Teaching problem solving and relationship building skills, guiding residents in appropriate social behaviors.
  • Completing case notes and checklists daily as directed by supervisor.
  • Administering medication as needed.
  • Providing transportation for residents as required, including the use of a personal vehicle when necessary.
