About The Position

Burton Center is seeking a part-time Direct Support Professional (DSP) to join their team. DSPs are crucial in fulfilling the Burton Center's mission to develop and discover unlimited potential in adults with disabilities and special needs. This role involves coaching, training, community advocacy, verbal prompts, and hands-on support to enhance the quality of life for individuals. The position is part-time, requiring 16-24 hours per week, specifically overnight shifts from 7:45 PM to 7:45 AM every other Saturday and Sunday. This role is within Burton Center's Community Training Home Program (CTH), where the DSP will support up to four adults with disabilities and special needs. Responsibilities include implementing person-centered training programs, encouraging independence and community engagement, and providing direct care for self-help skills and personal hygiene (e.g., toileting, bathing). The team provides comprehensive training for tasks such as administering medication, feeding assistance, and other individualized care. DSPs will also promote healthy lifestyles by preparing meals, following behavioral support plans, and maintaining a clean home environment. A Chromebook will be provided for tracking objectives and completing progress reports using the online system, Therap. Additional training will cover driving Burton Center vehicles, operating wheelchair lifts, therapeutic options, and obtaining Basic Life Support and MedTech certifications.

Requirements

  • SC Driver's License
  • Ability to lift or maneuver up to 50lbs
  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
  • Ability to be adaptive, a team player, and advocate for others
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill the Burton Center mission to develop and discover unlimited potential in adults with disabilities and special needs
  • Coach, train, provide community advocacy, verbal prompts, and hands-on support to promote individuals' quality of life
  • Create the best quality of life for up to 4 adults with disabilities and special needs in a Community Training Home (CTH)
  • Implement effective training programs using person-centered support
  • Encourage independence and community engagement
  • Provide direct care with self-help skills and personal hygiene, including toileting, changing incontinence briefs, and bathing
  • Administer medication
  • Provide feeding assistance
  • Provide any individualized care needed
  • Encourage and teach a positive and healthy lifestyle
  • Prepare and demonstrate how to prepare light meals from a designated meal plan
  • Follow behavioral support plans
  • Complete light housework to provide a clean and safe home environment
  • Track individuals' objectives and complete progress reports using the online system, Therap, on a Chromebook
  • Drive Burton Center vehicles
  • Operate wheelchair lifts safely
  • Use therapeutic options
