We are hiring Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in Astoria! DSPs work closely with people of all ages who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Depending on the supports needed, DSPs may work in a person’s home, in their family’s home, in a YAI residence, at a day habilitation center, or out in the community.   • Provides support in a variety of settings and in accordance with each person’s individualized service and behavior support plans.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and organized therapeutic environment.
  • Utilizes safe & appropriate handling procedures when working with individuals.
  • Assists with a variety of tasks for people we support, including personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Ensures that medication is administered as prescribed.
  • Develops an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for person specific needs.
  • Implements Behavior Support Plan as written by Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS).
  • Collects, records, and summarizes data on individuals’ observable behavior.
  • Serves as a member of a highly effective team, providing feedback and communicating programmatic needs.
  • Completes and maintains all necessary trainings and certifications.
  • Reviews communication logs daily and makes entries of events, progress notes, services and/or information.
  • Uses foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication.
  • Reports maintenance, upkeep and safety concerns observed at YAI facilities.
  • Consults with program leadership, clinical and other direct support staff.
  • Provides coverage for other direct support staff as requested.
  • May participate in the development of treatment plans.
  • Performs all other duties, as assigned.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to meet essential physical demands of position including frequent walking, sitting, standing, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling and reaching.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working with people with I/DD.
  • Basic computer skills including email and utilizing Workday.
  • Must hold or obtain and maintain Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention – Revised (SCIP-R) within one (1) year of appointment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work beyond regularly scheduled hours/shift.
  • HS diploma or its educational equivalent.
  • Work or life experience in the I/DD field is a plus, but not mandatory.
  • For elevated DSP positions, must have at least three (3) years of direct support professional experience.
