About The Position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Medication Technician (Med Tech Certified) provides direct support and medication administration to individuals supported by AccessPoint RI in residential and community-based settings. This role supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by promoting health, safety, independence, dignity, and choice while ensuring medications are administered accurately and in compliance with physician orders, state regulations, and AccessPoint policies. The DSP Med Tech works collaboratively with supervisors, nursing staff, families, and interdisciplinary team members to support individualized care plans and person-centered goals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Medication Technician (Med Tech) Certification as required by the State of Rhode Island
  • Successful completion of: State-approved Medication Technician exam
  • Required medication administration training (e.g., pharmacy-led course)
  • Approved CNA, PCA, or DSP training program as applicable
  • Current CPR certification
  • Ability to pass required background checks and clearances
  • Ability to read, write, and document clearly in English

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications accurately and timely in accordance with physician orders, nursing direction, AccessPoint policies, and state regulations.
  • Properly document all medication administration in the designated electronic or paper medication record.
  • Monitor for and promptly report medication side effects, errors, refusals, or changes in health status to the Supervisor and nursing staff.
  • Notify pharmacy and/or nursing staff when medications require refills or clarification.
  • Follow all medication storage, handling, and disposal procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure medication area.
  • Provide direct support with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, including personal care, hygiene, meal preparation, and mobility support.
  • Follow individualized service plans, care plans, and behavior support plans as assigned.
  • Support individuals in developing independence, self-advocacy, and life skills.
  • Promote residents’ rights, dignity, privacy, and choice at all times.
  • Accurately complete required documentation related to medication administration, health observations, and daily supports.
  • Participate in shift change communication and ensure continuity of care.
  • Promptly report changes in an individual’s condition, incidents, accidents, or safety concerns to the Supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all individual and agency information in compliance with HIPAA and AccessPoint policies.
  • Follow all AccessPoint safety, infection control, and emergency procedures.
  • Report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation immediately according to policy and state regulations.
  • Ensure safe supervision of individuals at all times.
  • Attend required trainings, in-services, and staff meetings, including annual medication and CPR recertifications.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.
  • Work collaboratively with individuals supported, coworkers, supervisors, nurses, families, and community partners.
  • Assist in orienting and supporting new staff as requested.
  • Perform all assigned duties in a cooperative, timely, and respectful manner.
