About The Position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) position is a full-time overnight role based in Brooklyn, NY, with a schedule from Sunday to Thursday, 11 PM to 7:30 AM, totaling 40 hours per week. The DSP is responsible for providing observations, evaluations, and reports to ensure and record an individual's progress toward treatment and habilitation goals. They guide and teach individuals to develop skills necessary for a more independent lifestyle, taking a lead role in various duties within a work site. The DSP will perform essential functions related to personal care, food preparation, maintaining the environment, individual development, and communication with team members and individuals in care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Certificate.
  • Ability to provide direct services to adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of OPWDD policies and active treatment programs.
  • Currently AMAP certified or able to become certified within six months of hire.
  • Currently SCIP-R certified or able to become certified within six months of hire.
  • Currently CPR and First Aid certified or able to become certified within six months.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct care experience with people with mental and/or physical disabilities.
  • AMAP, SCIP-R, CPR/SFA certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personal care including bathing, dental care, grooming, and hygiene assistance.
  • Teach and assist individuals in dressing, clothing selection, and laundry.
  • Administer first aid and CPR as needed, and teach individuals about health-related techniques.
  • Record and report health-related occurrences such as temperatures and blood pressures.
  • Assist individuals with medication administration and teach self-administration skills.
  • Support individuals during mealtimes and teach socialization skills.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly living environment, including routine housekeeping tasks.
  • Teach and perform minor maintenance tasks and ensure safety procedures are followed.
  • Guide individuals in developing communication skills and motor exercises.
  • Accompany individuals to community activities and assist in developing mobility skills.
  • Participate in program planning and communicate observations to the team.
