YAI was launched in February of 1957 out of a small school in Brooklyn, New York, dedicated to providing innovative services for the I/DD (intellectual and/or developmental disabilities) community. Co-Founders Bert MacLeech and Pearl Maze MacLeech envisioned a “total life adjustment approach, emphasizing personal growth, social responsibility, employment goals, and the development of independence for the individual.” Today, YAI has a team of over 4,000 employees and supports over 20,000 people in the I/DD community, including those with autism, Down syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy, operating throughout Downstate New York and Northern New Jersey with over 300 programs. The Direct Support Professional (DSP 1) assists individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, displaying patience and tolerance while providing emotional support and building positive relationships. The role involves supporting people to meet personal goals, engaging in respectful communications, encouraging socializing, and facilitating activities that provide social capital and community connections. DSPs are responsible for the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety, and managing crisis situations. They implement person-centered plans, maintain a clean and safe environment, and assist with personal care, medication administration, skill development, and transportation. The position requires understanding specialized clinical knowledge, implementing Behavior Support Plans, and collecting data on individuals' behavior. DSPs are part of a team, complete necessary trainings, and maintain documentation, all while complying with regulatory requirements.
