The Direct Support Professional (DSP) role involves working as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide essential services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The primary focus is to enrich the lives of individuals by assisting them with daily living activities, promoting independence, and ensuring their health and safety. DSPs are expected to work under supervision, maintain high ethical standards, and adapt to various settings, including residential and community environments.

  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal care, meal preparation, and medication administration.
  • Support individuals in developing independent living skills such as money management and community integration.
  • Provide advocacy for individuals to help them achieve their personal outcomes.
  • Ensure the health and safety of individuals by providing continuous care and maintaining staffing ratios.
  • Complete household maintenance tasks, including cleaning and laundry.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model, demonstrating appropriate social interactions.
  • Document services and complete safety checks in accordance with regulations and policies.
  • Provide transportation for individuals to various community sites.
  • Demonstrate skills outlined in the NYS DSP Core Competencies.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Complete mandatory trainings within the first 90 days and maintain ongoing recertifications.
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Understand regulations and document services in real-time using electronic technology.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Respond effectively to emergency and crisis situations.
  • Identify, report, and resolve safety and medical concerns proactively.
  • Ability to accurately count money and complete basic math transactions.
  • Complete training to become an approved medication administration professional (AMAP) and maintain certification.
  • Participate in team and service plan meetings as necessary.
  • Provide person-centered, culturally competent services.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Competitive pay rate of $17.50 per hour.
  • Flexible scheduling with specific hours on weekends and weekdays.
