About The Position

Join The Other Door team as a Direct Care Staff in Viroqua, WI! BASIC PURPOSE: The Direct Care Staff must identify as a person in mental health and/or substance use recovery so they can engage and encourages mental health/substance abuse consumers in recovery. They must serve to provide consumers with a sense of belonging, supportive relationship, valued role and community. This position is for minimal hours (3-6 hours weekly) and is a great resume builder. The goal is to promote wellness, independence, self direction and to facilitate recovery. The Direct Care Staff works with the service recipients as equals except in having more recovery experience and training, looking for and empowering signs of wellness and recovery, encouraging strength and self-direction. Direct Care Staff are examples of recovery, meaning they have self-identify as having mental illness and/or substance dependence and have made progress on the pathway toward recovery. This position typically starts at the mid wage range which can vary based on education and experience.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Peer Support Specialist OR has been employed/volunteered in a care providing field for a period of one year.
  • Self-identification as having mental illness and/or substance abuse disorder with progress made on the pathway toward recovery.
  • Lived experience including some time of stabilization and recovery with references supporting ability to function as Direct Care Staff.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s licenses and access to a private vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Identify as a person in mental health and/or substance use recovery. Reinforce hope and the potential for recovery to peers and others.
  • Ensure access to the Drop-In Center during operating hours ensuring that the center is secure and clean at the end of each shift.
  • Engage in outreach to the Vernon County Community for the purpose of awareness and education related to mental health issues and Drop-In Center events.
  • Establish rapport with Drop-In Center attendees. Solicit attendee suggestions for Drop-In Center activities and provide guidance during activity periods.
  • Provide consumers with information accessing community formal and natural supports and resources. This includes maintaining a current bulletin board of community resources and tracking such discussions.
  • Communicate regularly with other Direct Care Staff and CSP staff pertaining to Drop-In Center events and individual client recovery needs. This includes attending monthly Drop-In Center meetings as scheduled.
  • Adhere to FCC standards related to ethics and boundaries. Utilize the established supervisor hierarchy to communicate needs, ask questions and address concerns.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate groups including NAMI and ensure clean, secure usage of facility for AA/NA and other recovery oriented groups.
  • Complete documentation in accordance with supervisor request.
  • Notify the police immediately related to any safety issues that arise at The Drop-In Center. Notify supervisor of any crisis or emergency situation that may occur at The Drop-In Center immediately and within 24 hours and complete the required Internal Unusual Incident Report.
