About The Position

The Direct Care Nurse I position is a professional/technical role located at the Instructional Support Center. The position is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week, and is scheduled for 190 days annually. The role involves providing direct patient care to students who are medically fragile and need nursing support to participate in a school setting. The nurse will perform medical procedures, assess and document students' health statuses, and communicate effectively with students, families, and school personnel.

Requirements

  • Licensed through the Board of Nursing in Georgia as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.
  • Graduate of an accredited school or college of nursing.
  • Three years nursing experience required.
  • Pediatric experience preferred.
  • Effective critical thinking skills requiring competency in nursing process, problem solving, and decision-making.
  • Ability to provide specialized health-related services on a direct/indirect basis.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, students, parents, physicians, and staff.
  • Ability to work successfully with colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care to a student who has been determined medically fragile.
  • Perform appropriate medical procedures in compliance with the Georgia Registered Professional Nurse Practice Act.
  • Assess and document student's physical and psycho-social status appropriate to the age of the student served.
  • Document from a plan of care for the continuum of services, utilizing appropriate standards of care.
  • Implement and coordinate the plan of care, making appropriate revisions in response to changing needs.
  • Evaluate and document student's response to interventions and make appropriate revisions.
  • Communicate effectively with student, family, school personnel, and other disciplines.
  • Conduct and document appropriate health teaching to student and/or family.
  • Complete student's specific skill competency requirements.
  • Complete all orientation activities and serve as a mentor to newly hired or substitute Direct Care Nurse.
  • Follow the policies and procedures for Gwinnett County Public Schools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
