Position Summary: The Director of Softwood Lumber Operations has full P&L and related sales and operating accountability for two softwood lumber mills, and a co-generation plant. This individual provides leadership to effectively develop the organization to ensure operational effectiveness and financial success.

  • Conducts all leadership and management activities in alignment with Collins' core values and business objectives.
  • Fosters an injury-free safety culture by leading with safety and ensuring the implementation and maintenance of robust safety management systems to ensure accountability and safe workplace conditions.
  • Accountable for the profitable financial performance of assigned operations.
  • Leads team in developing robust operating budgets and ensuring effective cost controls in the sales and manufacturing processes.
  • Leads lumber sales team in optimizing product sales realization and return-to-log.
  • Collaborates with log procurement team to optimize log purchasing and management decisions.
  • Assists CEO with identifying and implementing long-range operating goals, performance improvement efforts, and effective use of new and advanced technologies.
  • Identifies opportunities for capital investment and develops business cases for the expenditure; and, once approved, oversees the purchase, installation, and start-up of the equipment.
  • Collaborates with managers and front-line team to optimize manufacturing processes and ensure implementation of best practices to enhance overall efficiencies and productivity.
  • Develops and sustains a high-performance workforce through partnership with the human resources team.
  • Implements consistent and effective performance management practices.
  • Ensures environmental regulatory and policy compliance in collaboration with company environmental team.
  • Provides leadership and training to accomplish key performance goals and objectives.
  • Initiates, investigates, reviews, and follows-up on possible value-added activities/process improvements/ efficient use of raw materials that are beneficial to the business.
  • Fosters a culture of data driven, continuously improving, and innovative process design across the company.
  • Develops key performance metrics and effective systems to support data analysis of activities.
  • Plans and implements processes and practices to monitor and improve upon the operational efficiencies and effectiveness of the operations.
  • Coaches team on how to assess current performance and quantify improvement opportunities.
  • Performs additional duties as required by supervisor.
  • Responsible for leading and managing the sales, lumber manufacturing, and cogeneration facility teams.
  • Responsible for performance management in accordance with company values, objectives, and policies.
  • Provides mentoring, coaching, training, and support consistent with developing and sustaining a high-performing and accountable team.
  • As needed, manages consulting teams engaged for project support.
  • Adept at rapid and effective decision making.
  • Operational and sales leadership with prior success developing effective operating strategies and performance monitoring systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective at managing change, developing people and systems, and engaging employees.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and critical-thinking skills; ability to think creatively and find innovative solutions to complex problems.

  • Some travel required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Seven or more years of progressive leadership experience in the wood products manufacturing sector.
  • Five or more years of successful history of management, with an emphasis on an engaging team with a respectful and inclusive style. Proven experience in meaningfully building collaborative relationships and fostering strong partnerships across multiple roles and job functions.
  • Financial management experience, including budgeting, analysis, and forecasting.
