About The Position

Director of Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) leads the strategic, operational, and financial aspects of the CDI program, ensuring medical records accurately reflect patient severity of illness, risk of mortality, and complexity of care. The director guides and directs staff in documentation quality to optimize coding accuracy (DRG), reimbursement, and compliance through aligned strategies with physicians, medical record coding, patient financial services and quality departments. Key functions include driving revenue integrity, managing compliance/denials, providing physician/staff education, leveraging technology, and leading staff to optimize quality metrics.

Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of experience in an acute care environment with management experience is required.
  • Experience in setting and executing strategies to achieve organizational goals is required.
  • Demonstrated skills in collaborating with others in an academic health system or setting is required.
  • Candidate should be familiar with working within a matrixed organization.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Master's Degree in a healthcare related clinical discipline or business management is required.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills with the ability to interpret complex clinical and financial data.
  • Working knowledge of financial statistics, data display, and report writing and performance improvement.
  • Proficient in the regulatory requirements for documentation and coding.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to engage physicians and key stakeholders.
  • Leadership expertise to develop professional staff and direct the work of the department.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products, electronic databases, and electronic medical record review.
  • Exhibits exceptional customer service and partnership skills with demonstrated ability to lead through influence using strong organizational and change management techniques.
  • Requires current state of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a Multi-state Nursing License from a participating state in the NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact).
  • Certification in coding and or clinical documentation improvement is required.
