Dining Mechanics support BYU Food Services by maintaining, repairing, and installing dining and specialized equipment on campus. The team emphasizes professionalism, skill development, and mentoring student employees while upholding the mission and standards of Brigham Young University. Level I – Dining Mechanic Responsible for maintaining and installing dining equipment, completing service requests and preventive maintenance, ensuring safe work practices, coordinating with requestors, other shops, and subcontractors, and helping train student employees. Level II – Dining Mechanic Includes all Level I duties plus additional responsibilities such as training and onboarding new hires, coordinating equipment installation and repair timelines, overseeing building maintenance within assigned areas, managing inventory and shop cleanliness, assisting other crews, and coordinating subcontractors. This role requires advanced refrigeration and mechanical skills.

  • Manage equipment installations, repair, and maintenance projects on campus.
  • Responsible for budget, quality, schedule, and safety on each project.
  • Procure materials and equipment delivery with vendors and suppliers.
  • Update installation, repairs, and maintenance equipment in PF computer system.
  • Coordinate subcontractors’ work.
  • Assuring personal safety and the safety of others around the work areas.
  • Hands on work to complete projects; including demolition and installation, etc.
  • Installation of ovens, fryers, sinks, and freezers, etc.
  • Repair of existing food related equipment.
  • Repair & replacement of building related items such as toilets, sinks, drinking fountains, lights, etc.
  • Repair and maintenance of existing food related equipment.
  • Building maintenance and repairs including replacement of light fixtures & bulbs.
  • Complete all required safety training.
  • Respond to unscheduled daily shop requests which vary in nature and urgency.
  • Duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Manager.
  • On-call work assignments.
  • Ensure Completion of equipment related work on each project.
  • Help with pre-construction meetings which include project phasing, schedules, reviewing construction documents, equipment selection, installation verification, equipment startup, and commissioning.
  • Manage subcontractors’ work.
  • Two years of refrigeration experience or a two-year refrigeration certification from a technical school and the ability to get the EPA Certification to be able to handle the various refrigerants we use on campus.
  • Have a basic skill level and understanding of refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, welding food service equipment, ice machines, furnaces and sheet metal work.
  • The ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involved personnel, including treating others with respect and kindness.
  • Has a valid Utah Drivers' License
  • Has excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • In addition to level I requirements, five years of refrigeration, steam, flight, and regular dish machine experience.
  • Two years of ice machine installation, maintenance, & repair experience.
  • Level II also includes at least two years of management, mentoring, and training experience
  • Very experienced in HVAC diagnosis, repair and maintenance including furnaces, air conditioning, water heaters, refrigerators, gas, and electric ranges.
  • Very experienced in the reading of blueprints both electrical and mechanical and excellence in troubleshooting and repair of foodservice equipment and refrigeration.
