About The Position

The Dimensional Inspection Engineer will be responsible for the development of dimensional acceptance methodology from design drawings or CAD models using Coordinate Measuring Machines or other high precision gages and Numerical Control machines for various products produced or processed at the Y-12 complex. The role includes providing input for the development of CMM programs for inspection machines, delivering a dimensional certification package to the customer, aiding in the design of special tooling or fixtures, and coordinating with inspection areas and the Oak Ridge Metrology Center for calibration of certified gaging. The engineer will also develop and maintain process controls, provide customer interface to validate methodologies, prepare cost estimates, evaluate precision equipment performance, and provide technical support for projects aimed at improved performance and process improvements. Daily assignments will be established based on the employee's level of experience, and training will be provided as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering/science discipline with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a Master's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a PhD in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2.
  • Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation.
  • Engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire after four years from graduation.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Experience with machining and/or inspection activities.
  • Ability to interpret information from design drawings and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and Y-12 organizational policies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop dimensional acceptance methodology from design drawings or CAD models.
  • Provide input for the development of CMM programs for inspection machines.
  • Deliver dimensional certification packages to customers.
  • Aid in the design of special tooling or fixtures for acceptance processes.
  • Coordinate with inspection areas and the Oak Ridge Metrology Center for calibration of certified gaging.
  • Develop and maintain process controls and configuration control of certification packages.
  • Prepare cost estimates for acceptance of parts and support activities for new programs.
  • Evaluate performance of precision equipment to maintain low measurement uncertainty.
  • Interface with multiple layers of personnel including program managers and inspectors.
  • Provide technical support for projects aimed at improved performance and process improvements.
  • Diagnose issues with calibration equipment, mainly coordinate measuring machines.
  • Assist with machine calibration and certification.
  • Develop specifications and obtain quotes from vendors for replacement parts and new equipment.
  • Attend off-site acceptance for CMM procurements.
  • Maintain security requirements for computers associated with dimensional inspection equipment.
