Dimensional Engineer

GMLake Orion, MI

About The Position

As a Dimensional Engineer at Orion Assembly, you will support the launch and long-term dimensional integrity of the T1XX-X programs. Initially focused on either the A-side or B-side of the Body Shop, you will expand your scope as the build progresses, ultimately supporting both sides of the system. Working under the guidance of the Lead Dimensional Engineer, you will help establish robust measurement systems, validate tooling and fixtures, and ensure dimensional alignment across Paint and General Assembly (GA). This role is critical not only during launch but also in steady-state production, where you will maintain dimensional stability, support supplier quality, and mentor emerging talent. You will be expected to engage with suppliers to request and validate dimensional data, occasionally traveling to support build events and quality reviews. Your work will directly influence A, B, and C metrics, and contribute to the overall quality of the vehicle.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing or dimensional engineering or related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Solid understanding of GD&T principles and vehicle body build processes.
  • Familiarity with CAD software and ability to interpret dimensional data.
  • Working knowledge of A, B, C metrics and variation analysis tools.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and contribute to shared goals.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and Practical Problem Solving (PPS).
  • Commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor and train technical roles, including Tech 5-dimensional team members.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts as needed is required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting new vehicle program launches.
  • Understanding of Body Shop dimensional systems and their impact on downstream operations.
  • Familiarity with supplier dimensional validation and build support.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor technical roles and support team development.
  • Comfort navigating CAD systems and dimensional data analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing dimensional control processes for the T1XX-X programs.
  • Support launch readiness by helping establish measurement systems, tooling validation, and process documentation.
  • Contribute to the integration of quality principles into dimensional practices across Body, Paint, and GA.
  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to ensure dimensional accuracy throughout the build process.
  • Request and interpret supplier dimensional data; travel to supplier sites as needed to support quality builds and issue resolution.
  • Support issue resolution and continuous improvement efforts across Paint and GA interfaces.
  • Apply A, B, and C metrics, along with E-31 variation analysis, to monitor and improve dimensional consistency.
  • Participate in Practical Problem Solving (PPS) activities to address and prevent dimensional issues.
  • Interpret CAD data to support root cause analysis and dimensional reviews.
  • Use measurement data to validate processes and drive improvements.
  • Train and mentor Tech 5 roles, helping build the next generation of dimensional talent.
  • Share best practices and support team development through hands-on guidance and collaboration.
  • Assist in preparing dimensional reports and reviews for plant leadership.
  • Communicate findings clearly to support strategic decision-making and launch success.
