About The Position

Join the team amplifying journalism in the Pacific Northwest! KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio seeks a Digital Reporter (Reporter 1) to gather, report, and write timely, accurate, and engaging digital journalism for KUOW’s online platforms. This position plays a key role in daily news coverage and feature reporting that serves audiences across the Puget Sound region. The Digital Reporter works in a fast-paced, digital-first newsroom environment and moves nimbly between assignments, producing stories across topic areas. While this is primarily a general assignment reporting role, candidates with beat expertise that strengthens KUOW’s coverage are encouraged to apply. Occasional contributions to KUOW shows and podcasts may be required. KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. We are an independent, nonprofit news organization producing award-winning journalism, podcasts, and events in service to the 3.9 million people in our coverage area. As a self-sustaining service of the University of Washington, our mission is to create and serve a more informed public by broadening conversations and deepening understanding.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional broadcast journalism experience including specific position requirements relating to news writing, radio production and audio editing.
  • Experience in preparing stories for online presentation, including pitching, reporting, writing, photo selection, and working with a content management system.
  • Knowledge of the Puget Sound region and stories that resonate with a local audience.
  • Digital story optimization and audience engagement techniques.
  • Content management systems.
  • Journalism ethics.
  • Ability to generate daily, breaking, and enterprise stories with impact.
  • Meet deadlines and check facts.
  • Manage several projects concurrently.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Connect with racially diverse communities in our region.
  • Take and apply feedback from editors.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, pitch, and report multimedia daily and feature stories for kuow.org, social media, and occasionally for KUOW shows and podcasts.
  • Meet tight deadlines for timely publication.
  • Monitor and help with breaking news coverage.
  • Help write headlines, story summaries, and captions that engage online audiences.
  • Identify and produce multimedia story elements like photos, videos, and simple graphics.
  • Collaborate with other reporters, editors, producers, and others across the content department to prepare digital stories.
  • Use inclusive story sourcing practices that reflect diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Capture source’s demographic data to help KUOW meet its source diversity goals.
  • Support internal station initiatives.
  • Participate in professional trainings as required by the station or the University of Washington.
  • Represent the station at KUOW events or community conversations.
  • Participate in special coverage, projects or series as a reporter, host, or both.
