The New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country; its mission is to combat municipal corruption. DOI serves the people of New York City by acting as an independent and nonpartisan watchdog for New York City government, City agencies, and City employees, vendors with City contracts, individuals and entities that receive City funds. The Department of Investigation is actively seeking a skilled Cyber Investigations Intern to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting a range of confidential investigations. You will be exposed to hands-on experience retrieving, reviewing, and analyzing digital evidence from diverse electronic devices. These devices can include laptops, desktop computers, servers, mobile devices, tablets, and CCTV systems. You will also gain unmatched experience in establishing and maintaining the chain of custody for digital evidence, logging and securing property, aiding in computer-related search warrants, and collaborating closely with a dedicated team of investigators and consultants to advance our investigative efforts. You will also work alongside the Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit, which is responsible for leading CyberSecurity related investigations as well as conducting Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) research for investigative staff.

  • Aid staff in the maintenance of evidence and chain of custody
  • Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school
  • Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school
  • Basic knowledge of digital forensics
  • Basic knowledge of cyber security principles
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, including MS
  • Preferred knowledge of forensic tools
  • Strong interpersonal, logistical, organizational, time management and writing skills
  • Willingness and motivation to learn and implement new skills
  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility
  • Potential for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs
