About The Position

The Digital Innovation and Integration Center of Excellence (DIICE) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern to support our mission of advancing digital transformation across Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). The DIICE directly supports AFMC's Digital Materiel Management (DMM) goals to accelerate integrated capability delivery across the materiel lifecycle and functional disciplines. DIICE generates digital solutions centered on model-based systems integration efforts that result in improved execution of weapon acquisitions and support across the AFMC enterprise in support of the warfighter. This internship provides hands-on experience working alongside engineers, researchers, and senior leaders to translate complex technical initiatives into clear, accessible documentation for diverse AFMC audiences. This internship is located on Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. While we’re thrilled to connect with candidates nationwide, this opportunity does not include temporary relocation or housing stipend support. This position requires the individual to be a U.S. Citizen in order to work on applicable programs. This is an hourly, non‑exempt internship with a pay range of $22–$26 per hour, commensurate with degree progress, completed credits, and relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in university and actively working on degree
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical topics into plain English for non-technical audiences.
  • Foundational understanding of Model-Based Systems Engineering/Model-Based Systems Concepts (MBSE/MBSC) and general technical literacy.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and accurately represent technical information.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering, research, and leadership teams.
  • Willingness to learn and ask clarifying questions to understand complex topics.
  • Eligibility to work on site or remotely, depending on DIICE requirements.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent + Must be working towards a Bachelor's or Masters' degree (please see table below).
  • Education transcript verification required along with full background check
  • Engineering Intern 1 High School Diploma or equivalent + Must be working towards a Bachelor's degree with up to 20% of the required credits completed.
  • Engineering Intern 2 High School Diploma or equivalent + Must be working towards a Bachelor's degree with between 20% and 40% of the required credits completed.
  • Engineering Intern 3 High School Diploma or equivalent + Must be working towards a Bachelor's degree and/or Master's degree with between 40% and 60% of the required credits completed.
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment, both onsite and remotely.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (e.g., sitting or standing) for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment (keyboard, mouse, phone, printer).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and via virtual platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or experience in systems engineering, computer science, engineering management, technical communications, or related fields.
  • Experience writing technical papers, briefing documents, or research summaries.
  • Familiarity with military or government organizations (not required but beneficial).

Responsibilities

  • Engage with project teams to gather technical insights, background information and synthesize complex Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), digital engineering, and DoW Acquisition Transformation concepts into concise, user-friendly communication.
  • Develop 3-5 page papers or briefing summaries of current DIICE projects, detailing: Technical details and methodologies
  • The purpose and problem being addressed
  • The impact and relevance to AFMC organizations and missions, written in plain, accessible language
  • Conduct digital ecosystem mapping and visualization by creating a visual process map or flowchart (using tools like Visio, PowerPoint, or other modeling software) that illustrates how different data artifacts and decision points connect, including:
  • How DIICE projects connect to command-wide initiatives
  • How digitally-minded organizations within the command connect to DIICE efforts and command-wide initiatives
  • Assist in mapping out next DIICE initiative/project, to include:
  • Identify key stakeholders in project and develop matrix to map interests and influence
  • Assist in defining timeline for project
  • Assist in defining deliverables
  • Balance multiple assignments simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Present findings verbally to DIICE staff and stakeholders when needed.
  • Assist with other communications, documentation, or research tasks in support of DIICE’s Education Excellence, Research and Tech Transfer, Consulting, and Best Practices lines of effort.
  • Coordinate and route draft papers and briefings through Public Affairs (PA) for review and approval.
