About The Position

The Digital Archivist at the Peabody Institute is responsible for the accessioning, preservation, and maintenance of born-digital and digitized special collections and Institute records. This role involves managing content delivery and digital archiving, ensuring adherence to best practices for long-term digital preservation, accessibility, and copyright. The position supports the library's mission to serve the Peabody community and the broader Johns Hopkins University, while also contributing to the cultural documentation of Baltimore and Maryland.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, or related field required.
  • Two years professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with XSLT, Xpath, Xquery, and scripting languages such as Python.
  • Experience digitizing analog media such as audiocassettes and VHS tapes.
  • Experience with audio and video editing software like Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, or Audacity.
  • Experience with digital collection platforms such as Preservica, Avalon, Aviary, or CONTENTdm.
  • Archival certification or formal archival education.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the lifecycle of born-digital and digitized Institute records and personal papers.
  • Provide guidance on the preservation and transfer of born-digital and digitized personal papers.
  • Manage digital assets in systems such as Aviary, CONTENTdm, and Preservica.
  • Establish procedures for digitization projects and process all digitally reformatted assets for preservation and access.
  • Assist in the development and management of grants related to born-digital materials or digitization projects.
  • Contribute to the field and pursue professional development activities.
  • Collaborate with Peabody IT and vendors for workflow improvements.
  • Train and coach graduate student workers.
  • Process born-digital institutional recordings for preservation and online access.
  • Coordinate with Resource Description Librarian to develop discovery strategies for online catalog.
