About The Position

Johnson County Community College (JCCC) inspires learning to transform lives and strengthen communities. The Digital Accessibility Tester supports this mission by providing hands-on accessibility testing and auditing of digital products, applications and content using assistive technologies as a primary, everyday user. This role ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II requirements for public entities, specifically WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and supports evaluation of vendor accessibility through review of Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs). This position places strong emphasis on usability, lived experience, and practical impact for all users.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience identifying accessibility issues and recommending remediation strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience navigating websites, applications, and documents using assistive technology.
  • Frequent use of one or more assistive technologies (e.g., screen reader, screen magnification, speech input) to access digital content.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional or volunteer experience in digital accessibility testing, quality assurance, or usability testing.
  • Experience reviewing or contributing to VPATs or vendor accessibility documentation.
  • Familiarity with higher education, public sector, or compliance-driven environments.
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 or emerging accessibility standards.
  • Experience collaborating with developers, designers, or content creators

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual accessibility testing of web applications, online learning platforms, student portals, and digital documents using assistive technologies as a native user.
  • Evaluate accessibility from a user-experience perspective, explaining how issues affect people with disabilities in real-world use.
  • Use assistive technologies such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack, ZoomText, or similar tools to identify, reproduce, and document accessibility barriers based on authentic user workflows.
  • Conduct limited automated testing to supplement manual findings and validate results.
  • Create clear, concise defect reports that include: Description of the accessibility issue Relevant WCAG success criteria User impact and severity Recommended remediation guidance
  • Review and validate vendor accessibility documentation (VPATs) and assess compliance risk from an end-user perspective.
  • Communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences to promote accessibility awareness and learning.
  • Participate in accessibility discussions and consultations as needed.
  • Review course documents and digital materials submitted by faculty and staff and provide accessibility feedback.
  • Other duties as assigned.
