About The Position

Assists in the preparation and service of meals to residents, visitors, and staff and is also responsible for assistance in maintaining equipment, supplies, and work areas in a clean, orderly, and sanitary condition to prevent the introduction or spread of infection and ensure the safe and efficient completion of assigned tasks. Performs all duties in compliance with established facility policy and in accordance with all Federal, State, and local regulations.

Requirements

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents needed for accurate and efficient completion of duties.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret instructions communicated in oral, written, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with residents/patients, staff, family members, vendors, suppliers, and other contacts, both inside and outside the facility.
  • Must exhibit patience and a positive attitude towards the elderly population and a desire to provide a service to the community.
  • Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily productive/technical nature.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, and reach for extended periods (up to full 8-hour shift; position rarely involved sitting).
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds frequently (up to 66% of the time spent in performance of duties) and up to 50 pounds rarely (less than 33% of time spent in performance of duties).
  • Manual dexterity that allows grasping, carrying, and holding equipment and supplies as needed to perform tasks.
  • Ability to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel within the limits normally associated with daily activities, with or without corrective devices for sight and/or hearing.
  • Ability to verbally communicate with residents, visitors, and staff members during performance of duties.

Responsibilities

  • Know, understand, and follow safe food handling procedures, including proper hot and cold “holding” temperatures using appropriate thermometers or other tools as needed.
  • Know, understand, and follow safety procedures for using chemicals in a food service environment.
  • Know, understand and comply with applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and requirements for food service operations as they apply to assigned duties.
  • Following instructions of Cook or other Supervisory personnel, assist with preparation and service of hot and cold food items, snacks, and beverages; to include but not limited to entrée, side dishes, salads, soups, sandwiches, beverages, and dessert items, always following appropriate sanitary techniques to avoid contamination of food and/or work surfaces.
  • Know, understand, and follow safe service-ware handling procedures, to include, but not limited to: inspection for cleanliness, rack storage, and infection control.
  • Assist with washing, sanitizing, and storage of dishware and utensils after meals.
  • Follow workflow checklists and maintain steady work pace to ensure efficient, accurate and adequate supply of food products and clean dishware necessary to assemble meal trays within allotted time constraints.
  • Effectively and efficiently communicate information to co-workers as needed to complete tasks.
  • Identify, assemble necessary equipment and supplies, and accurately divide, assemble, cover, and label individual portions of items requiring separate dishes (e.g. soups, salads, dessert items, and beverages) according to style and method of service.
  • Arrange resident meal tray cards according to the sequence used for meal delivery on the units, if applicable.
  • Identify, prepare and assemble necessary kitchen equipment to ensure accurate and efficient resident meal service, either on assembly line or individual plates based on resident requests and in accordance with prescribed dietary requirements, preferences, and known allergens as indicated on individual meal cards.
  • Set up resident meal trays, plates, and/or food service carts accurately according to tray cards or other direction in a timely manner for efficient delivery to residents.
  • Assist with meal service, including but not limited to: plating of food items on assembly line in accordance with individual meal cards; assembling individual trays and loading on food service carts in an organized and efficient manner to ensure accurate meal delivery; and timely delivery of carts to resident units.
  • May also be required to assist with serving residents their meals, either from meal cart or service line.
  • Remove meal trays from residents and/or units after completion of meals; returning items to cart and/or kitchen for cleaning and storage.
  • Upon completion of meal service, clean and sanitize work area, returning equipment used to operate tray assembly line to respective sections of the kitchen, including washing, sanitizing, inspection, and storage of dishware and utensils as needed.
  • Maintain unit refrigerators with sufficient products and check for expiration dates on products.
  • Ensure all products are labeled and dated appropriately upon delivery to units.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure efficient and safe completion of duties.
  • Assist in the proper care, use and cleaning of kitchen equipment, supplies, and work areas.
  • Perform all duties utilizing appropriate infection control and safety precautions as outlined in established facility policy and/or Federal, State, or Local regulations.
  • Attend and/or complete in-service education and training as directed by facility policy, regulation, and/or Supervisor.
  • Adhere to expectations regarding attendance, punctuality, and professional appearance as outlined in established facility policy.
  • Know, understand, and comply with facility personnel and operational policies and procedures relative to position.
  • Foster and maintain professional and cordial relationships with co-workers, residents, visitors, vendors and others in the completion of assigned tasks.
  • Assist with receiving and storage of supplies and food items as requested or as needed.
  • Know and adhere to Residents’ Rights policies.
  • Attend departmental and staff meetings and participate in in-service training, committees, or workgroups as needed or as directed.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new staff members as assigned or required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
