About The Position

The Fleet Technician Level 3 is responsible for diagnosing, adjusting, and repairing a wide range of class 8 tractor and trailing fleet equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, diesel engines, electrical systems, brakes, cooling systems, transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, differentials, power dividers, starters, alternators, air conditioning systems, DPF systems, aftertreatment devices, fan clutches, engine electronics, power steering systems, and steering. The role also involves conducting Preventive Maintenance (PM) services, repairing tires, and performing mechanical and general appearance reconditioning of equipment. The technician will operate with no supervision, ensuring timely and efficient completion of duties, and will also mentor other technicians.

Requirements

  • 4 years practical experience with tractor trailer maintenance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Annual vehicle inspector certified (per DOT requirements).
  • Brake inspector certified (per DOT requirements).
  • Advanced skills with diagnostic software for Detroit DD15 engines, and DEF/after treatment repairs.
  • Proficient with windows-based computer systems and ability to use diagnostic software.
  • Expert understanding of fleet maintenance policies, DOT standards, and industry practices.
  • Specialized training and experience in the diagnosis/troubleshooting of major components (engines, transmissions, differentials).
  • OEM training courses required (FRTL or INTL).
  • Proficiency in the use of all tools of trade (including welding equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools).
  • Clean MVR.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and written, and read and understand English.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in non-climate-controlled conditions.
  • Willingness to travel for training.
  • Must have own tools (hand and pneumatic) sufficient to do any job that is required.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair all series of class 8 tractor and trailing fleet equipment, including diesel engines, electrical, brake, cooling systems, transmissions, clutches, differentials, power dividers, starters, alternators, air conditioning systems, DPF systems, aftertreatment devices, fan clutches, engine electronics, power steering systems, and steering.
  • Conduct Preventive Maintenance (PM) services and repair tires as needed.
  • Comply with all safety and best practices and follow company Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the repair and diagnosis of diesel engines, power train (differentials, transmissions, clutches, drive shafts, wheel ends), electrical systems (starters, alternators, lights), HVAC systems, steering systems, electronics (ECMs, ECUs, sensors), engine bolt-on items (turbos, fan clutches, cooling system), brake systems (ABS & air disk brakes), suspension systems, tire issues, and aftertreatment devices (DPF and DOC) with no assistance.
  • Perform electrical system repairs, cooling system maintenance, and complete vehicle diagnosis.
  • Perform all levels of preventive maintenance services on truck and trailing equipment.
  • Perform mechanical and general appearance reconditioning of equipment for "trade-ins" and prepare new equipment for delivery.
  • Successfully demonstrate welding skills (mig, tig) in non-standard situations and on varying materials as needed (AU and steel).
  • Identify and perform warrantable repairs and document on repair order.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, jacks, and hoists.
  • Maintain work area appearance and safety.
  • Road test vehicles when necessary to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure proper functioning.
  • Perform duties with no supervision and in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments.
  • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Specialize in repairing and troubleshooting major components such as engine, transmissions, differentials, and fifth wheels, including replacing complete assemblies, turbochargers, and fuel system components.
  • Provide directions and repair instructions and mentor other technicians as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with DOT standards and properly document work completed.
  • Proficiently enter and process all transactions within the maintenance system.
  • Assist with fleet analyses, action development, and stances.
  • Complete or assist with miscellaneous projects as assigned by supervisor.
