About The Position

The Fleet Management Division is seeking a Senior Diesel Technician to join our award-winning Fleet Management Division. The Diesel Technician will be a key member of a dedicated team of highly skilled EVT certified technicians, supporting Fleet Management and Charlotte Fire Department. This position will be responsible for the daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis and repair of fire apparatus and equipment for the City of Charlotte Fleet Management Division. The Senior level technician performs diagnosis and repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, air and braking systems, complex hydraulic systems, and additional complex systems specific to fire apparatus and support equipment including but not limited to fire suppression pumps and aerial rescue systems. This position requires the ability to support an on-call schedule 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends, for 7 consecutive days. The on-call schedule will require the technician to be on-call in a 4-week rotation. Requirements

  • Knowledge of methods, tools and materials used in maintaining and repairing heavy trucks, heavy truck related equipment, sanitation equipment, and construction equipment.
  • Understanding of electrical and hydraulic schematics, commitment to life-long learning, keeping pace with new technology.
  • Ability to effectively be part of a team.
  • Works well without direct supervision
  • Works in organized, clean and safe manner.
  • Ability to diagnose defects in a range of equipment including but not limited to fire apparatus, heavy trucks, sanitation equipment, construction equipment, and light vehicles.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and effectively write diagnosis and recommendation of work being performed to complete work orders.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to pass background and motor vehicle license check.
  • Ability to work holidays, some weekends, and overtime.
  • Ability to travel out of town for training on occasion.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. of equipment and/or tools.
  • Must have or obtain the following licensures within 6 months (180) days of hire: NC Inspection License AC Recover and Recycling License
  • Must have within one year of hire: Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Must have basic hand tools and tool storage upon hire.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience; or a High School diploma/GED with two (2) years of relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree or certification from an accredited technical school/college/university.
  • ASE Heavy/Medium Truck certifications
  • Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE.
  • At least three years of experience related to heavy truck and diesel engine repair.
  • Knowledge/experience with fire apparatus maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Daily evaluation, inspection, diagnosis and repair of front-line fire apparatus and auxiliary equipment, heavy truck fleet, construction equipment, and other municipal equipment.
  • Occasional repair of light duty vehicles.
  • Diagnosis and repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, on and off-road equipment drivetrains, air braking systems, steering and suspension, and complex systems specific to fire apparatus and support equipment.
  • Utilize fleet maintenance software to accurately document work performed.
  • Communicate with all levels of fleet operations and customers ensuring repairs are completed.
  • Interpret manuals, electrical diagrams, and diagnostic software.
  • Understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Support an on-call schedule 24 hours a day, including holidays and weekends, for 7 consecutive days in a 4-week rotation.
