A certified Diesel Tech (Level 2) is responsible for diagnostics, estimates, and repairs highly complex electrical and mechanical systems, primarily on tractors, following standard operating procedures [SOP’s]. This individual completes routine rebuilds and replacements, makes best value and safety decisions to continue to operate, repair or replace, then performs technical repairs and replacement. Uses technical publications and other internet-based manuals, technical information, and check sheets. Some employees in this role function as local shop subject matter experts [SME] on all tractor systems. Further, the same may be a resource for Warranty, Senior Maintenance Leadership Team, and Training department.

Requirements

  • Two Year Technical Degree, certificate, or diploma in diesel engines, electronics, or related systems. At least five years of verifiable experience in the industry.
  • Experience diagnosing unusual electrical problems in any system including Electrical Control Module/Unit interfaces, wiring, sensors, and controls, diagnosing unusual engine problems, diagnosing unusual problems with cab components, drive train, and braking components.
  • Experience with windows-based computer systems. Detroit / 3DL Cummins / Insite PACCAR / Davie
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to problem solve complex issues. [Based on aptitude and past performance].
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication, and teambuilding skills.
  • Welding experience in non-standard situations and on varying materials.
  • Thorough understanding of Multiplex wiring, 2019 and newer emission control systems. Manual and especially Automated transmissions.
  • Provides own basic hand tools/tool storage. [Other required tools will be provided by the company].

  • CDL not required, but appreciated.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and repairs problems in the areas of engine, component parts, exhaust, and aftertreatment. Many other various other vehicle items [i.e. telematics, camera systems, steering, manual transmissions, automated transmissions, high pressure fuel injection systems, HVAC, charging and cranking systems, APU’s and Air Disc Brakes].
  • Uses diagnostic software or other methods to diagnose electrical and mechanical problems related to all systems including engine, drivetrain, cab, brakes, suspension, and electrical and communication systems. [Detroit, 3DL, Cummins Insite, Davie, Meritor WABCO, Bendix etc].
  • Utilizes electronic instructions [sometimes email] could be [MS Teams message] to understand, document and complete repair orders. Utilizes computer system FLEETIO to accurately create, track and complete work order repairs including the tracking of time (labor hours), parts used and work completed.
  • Makes decisions on whether a component can continue to operate or should be repaired/replaced, based on best overall value and safety impact.
  • Individually or in conjunction with another Technicians, performs tractor PMs including responsibility for resolving any equipment performance problems identified by Drivers.
  • May communicate with internal and external customers [i.e. other Shop, Drivers, Operations, Operations Leaders, OEMs, etc.] on such things as company stances, wait times, reasons for repair decisions and status updates.
  • Acts as a resource to the local Leadership Team, Warranty, and Training Departments. Examples include identifying problems and solutions to manufacturing / design problems and may participate in the development and presentation of training curriculum.
  • If licensed, drives commercial equipment in the yard and on public roads, which requires a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), to diagnose problems and take corrective actions.
  • Charges out parts removed from inventory and assists in maintaining parts inventory.
  • Responsible for general Shop Diagnostic Tooling.
