About The Position

Perform mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of vehicles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements
  • Bus Driver Certification
  • Diesel Engine Certification
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
  • Ability to operate vehicle repair equipment and tools
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
  • Ability to pass alcohol and drug test and complete required bus driver safety training
  • Ability to operate bus
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Five years’ experience as mechanic and experienced driver with clear driving record

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment and assist mechanics in evaluating minor mechanical problems and inspect repairs completed by mechanics.
  • Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc.
  • Check and repair electrical and cooling systems and install heaters and similar accessories as needed.
  • Weld and perform minor body work.
  • Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs and service; maintain accurate records.
  • Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed.
  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care; maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Assist in training mechanics and mechanic helpers.
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition and follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report conditions that are not correctable to supervisor.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses and report hazardous conditions on the route.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as: first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  • Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.
