About The Position

TCAT is currently offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus to qualified Diesel Mechanics. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License by receiving paid training from our highly-skilled staff. As a Mechanic at TCAT, you will be part of a cohesive unit of mechanics possessing broad knowledge and unique skills. Working on our transit fleet of over 50 buses, you will be responsible for day-to-day repairs as well as supporting a strong preventative maintenance program while keeping a clean, efficient, and safe working area. Major repair work could include engine overhauls or replacements, automatic transmissions, drive line, differential, air brakes, body modifications, etc. TCAT’s mechanics are a critical component of ensuring the safety of our drivers, passengers, and the community at large. To that end, you will regularly receive training opportunities that will enable you to build on your current skills and stay at the forefront of new technologies, concepts and developments in the world of diesel repair and maintenance. The ideal Mechanic candidate has demonstrated ability to work independently in the performance of routine servicing and preventive maintenance of the transit fleet. As part of a team of mechanics possessing a diversity of skills, the Mechanic performs highly skilled work related to diagnosing, rebuilding and repairing of major components of engines and systems on all or some of the following: diesel, gas, and alternative fuel engines.

Requirements

  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED).
  • Minimum three years mechanical experience working on diesel engines in a heavy equipment environment with vehicles over 18,000 pounds.
  • Skilled in the use of tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of heavy duty equipment (e.g. drill press, welders, hoists, hydraulic press, bus washer).
  • Must be experienced in air brakes diagnosis and repair.
  • Must possess a commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brake endorsement or obtain license within 3 months of hire date.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must provide basic mechanic hand tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with peers and to work independently.
  • Strong communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment with respect to bus repairs and equipment safety.
  • Ability to use computer and access information.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited school with certification in diesel technology is desirable.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three (3) years’ experience repairing diesel engines in a transit environment; however, previous heavy-duty or automotive experience and relevant certifications will be considered!
  • Experience in airbrake diagnosis and repair, Cummins engines and Allison transmissions are a plus.
  • A commitment to safety, strong communication skills, the ability to read and follow written instructions, the ability to work with a team as well as independently, and proficiency with computers and sensor tools is a must.
  • The successful candidate must provide their own tools.

Responsibilities

  • routine servicing and preventative maintenance of transit fleet including: lubrications, oil changes, tire repairs, welding, tune-ups, electrical repairs, body and paint repairs
  • completing major repair work including: engine overhaul or replacement, clutch replacement, standard and automatic transmissions, drive line, differential, air brakes, body modifications, diesel and gas engine repair
  • using specialized electronic equipment for diagnosis and repair of computerized controls on engines and transmissions
  • completing work orders on all repair and maintenance work performed
  • using the computerized maintenance records to enter data, check on recent repairs and to review past history on vehicles
  • responding to emergency road calls
  • assisting with on-the-job-training of new mechanics
  • Completes shop maintenance including: minor repairs on overhead doors, repair and maintenance of all shop equipment, hoist, air compressor, bus washer, jacks and other small tools
  • clean-up of work-area
  • assisting bus handlers or mechanics in the operation of the fluid management system and bus washing.
