About The Position

Under direct supervision of the shop manager and/or a journey worker the apprentice will assist with the responsibilities for the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-driven vehicles and related heavy and specialized equipment and reviewed in accordance with specifications and accepted standards and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or equivalent
  • Current and valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) upon completion of the apprenticeship program
  • All hires must pass the pre-employment drug screening according to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employees Testing Act (OTETA).
  • All hires must meet the physical requirements of the Post Offer Employment Testing (POET).

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned competencies and maintain accurate records of training hours and progress.
  • Participate in related technical instruction and all training activities, coursework, and skill building workshops.
  • Observe and learn standard procedures, workflows, and best practices relevant to the role.
  • Attend required meetings and progress monitoring check-ins with supervisors/journeyworkers/mentors.
  • Perform general, including but not limited to, minor, and major repair work on automobiles, buses, trucks, heavy equipment and other related automotive, diesel, and mechanical equipment.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units or parts in cooling, fuel, exhaust, or other systems; tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Repair and overhaul brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, repair and install hydraulic and electronic controls, and perform minor electrical repair.
  • Apply a broad knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the auto mechanic trade and of occupational hazards and safety precautions; of operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of equipment; and the principles of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines.
  • Maintain work areas and be cognizant of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safe storing and disposing of waste materials according to the regulatory requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Assist with administering safety inspections using required forms and maintaining accurate records as required by the Florida Department of Education, School Transportation Management Department.
  • Learn and uphold skills necessary to safely operate tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop repair equipment.
  • Assist with maintaining assigned service vehicles in a clean, organized manner and maintaining the required level of stock for that vehicle.
  • Maintain personal work area in a clean, orderly fashion and assist in shop/work area cleaning.
  • Immediately report any known unsafe or hazardous mechanical condition that exists on any vehicle or equipment to applicable staff.
  • Perform road tests on vehicles to verify complaints or repairs when assigned (after CDL is obtained).
  • Assist in fueling and cleaning of buses or support vehicles as requested.
  • Maintain all types of tools and equipment in good working order and condition with routine maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
