About The Position

This is a safety sensitive position which performs the maintenance, servicing, repairing and rebuilding of a variety of gasoline, propane and diesel-powered fleet vehicles throughout the District. Responsible to the Equipment/Fleet Foreman for related job functions. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of trade school courses or equivalent training in maintenance, automotive mechanics, heavy equipment mechanics, hydraulic systems, and air brake systems; or three (3) years as a maintenance and heavy equipment mechanic with experience as mentioned above in a professional mechanic shop
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable
  • Must have ASE 609 A/C Certification
  • Must pass post-offer, pre-employment drug screen, medical exam, and motor vehicle report in compliance with District insurance guidelines

Nice To Haves

  • bilingual in Spanish is a plus
  • CDL preferred

Responsibilities

  • Determines by regular inspections the repair and maintenance work necessary to prevent breakdowns and major overhauls in a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles.
  • Recommending which equipment should be shut down for major service in conjunction with the Equipment/Fleet Maintenance Manager.
  • Follows trade practice and manufacturer's specifications when making repairs, replacement, or mechanical alterations.
  • Required to make minor and some major repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles in the field, most major repairs will be done in the mechanic shop.
  • Maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and overhauls complete engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air brake systems, DEF systems, under carriage systems repairs, etc. as well as other mechanical parts and equipment.
  • Responsible for replacing, fitting, and installing parts, as necessary. Must be able to disassemble and reassemble any and all equipment components, check and calibrate after installation is made and make all necessary changes and adjustments.
  • Must be able to diagnose and repair A/C systems.
  • Must have ability to use electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, special devices, tools, and welding equipment as needed.
  • Required to log in all assigned shop orders, record hours of work and all supplies, materials, and parts on work in progress and work completed.
  • Responsible for accurately requisitioning supplies, materials, and parts for assigned work and obtaining approval from the Equipment/Fleet Maintenance Manager before submitting request to the warehouse.
  • Perform DOT inspections and repairs to meet safety standards.
  • Pre-trip inspection of vehicle required prior to use during shift.
  • Part of the pumping crew during emergency situations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area, including the shop area.
  • Responsible for compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Contributes to a team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Responsible for knowing and abiding by all department and District policies and procedures.
  • Attendance during scheduled shift.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
