About The Position

As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be instrumental in promoting good government in DeKalb County. Duties include operating or using various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; performing scheduled preventive maintenance; inspecting and testing all equipment systems; repairing heavy equipment; welding and fabricating parts; preparing and commissioning new equipment; and decommissioning equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, with vocational training or technical training in automotive repair or a related field.
  • Three years of automotive, heavy truck, or heavy equipment maintenance repair experience including one year at the journeyman level.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Some positions may be required to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months of starting employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate or use various machinery, equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance; change oil, hydraulic fluid, air filters, fuel filters, and other expendables as required.
  • Inspect seals, hoses, and tires for wear or damage; arrange replacement as needed.
  • Perform equipment inspections; inspect and test all equipment systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, hydraulics, electrical system, and HVAC.
  • Complete or revise work order for repairs; obtain required parts; inspect completed work.
  • Repair heavy equipment; troubleshoot and diagnose electrical, hydraulic and engine problems.
  • Utilize multi-meter, test light, pressure gauges, flow meters, vacuum and compression gauges.
  • Weld and fabricate parts; weld broken parts; fabricate replacement parts.
  • Prepare and commission new equipment and accessories; complete records for new equipment.
  • Decommission equipment; remove County decals, equipment, accessories, and ensure equipment is ready for disposition.
