What You’ll Do: Promote Safety. Take an active role in prioritizing safety throughout the operation for yourself and others at all times in accordance with MSHA and Vulcan standards. Repair and Maintain Mobile Equipment. Service, repair, adjust, and test all mobile equipment that operates throughout the plant to maximize performance and limit downtime. Inspect Equipment and Materials. Inspect all mobile equipment to identify and troubleshoot the cause of errors. Perform repairs to address problems when necessary. Handle and Move Objects. Handle, install, position, and move parts, materials, and industrial hand tools in a safe manner throughout the shop and plant. Document and Record Information. Ensure correct and accurate documentation is completed daily and monthly regarding all mobile equipment. Enter and maintain service reports for all the mobile equipment in written or electronic form. Operate Equipment. Assist in driving heavy equipment and vehicles throughout the plant to ensure production continues efficiently. Perform General Physical Activities. Perform physical activities that require moving your whole body and considerable use of your arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Attend Trainings: Once a month (typically the third week), apprentices must attend week long training sessions at Carter Machinery locations in Sterling VA, Mechanicsville VA, or Elkridge MD. This may require overnight travel depending on where you live. No trainings in November or December. Regional Travel. This apprentice will work with our Central Virginia mechanics in the following areas: Rockville, Chester, Petersburg, and Prince George. The apprentice will be based out of the facility closest to them (this does not have to be the location listed on this requisition) and will use a company vehicle, their personal vehicle, or travel alongside our mechanics to the other locations as needed. Apprentices must be willing to use their personal vehicles for travel. After Completion of the Program: The tentative timeline for this program is July 2026 - April 2027. While we strive to offer roles locally, full-time placements are subject to regional business needs upon graduation. Consequently, candidates who demonstrate geographic mobility will have access to the widest range of career opportunities.
