The Die Cast Tooling Engineer position at JTEKT Automotive is responsible for welding die repairs, interacting with vendors, creating CAD drawings, and performing various other duties as required. The role involves ensuring that casting die cavities are repaired and maintained to production specifications, as well as managing spare parts and tooling inventory. The engineer will also participate in quality control activities and provide technical leadership to the Die Maintenance Department.

  • Perform and advise on welding of casting die cavities and subsequent grinding, polishing, filing, and fitting.
  • Duplicate cavity shapes per casting drawings, sample castings, and/or sample cavities.
  • Interact with vendors/suppliers regarding spare die components, Kaizen ideas, and drawing changes.
  • Produce CAD drawings for spare parts manufacturing.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of die cavities, spare parts, and shot-end tooling.
  • Prepare die life and die order forecasts for review.
  • Participate in QC circle and activities as requested.
  • Inspect new dies and fit new cavities for PPAP preparation or die repair.
  • Assist in troubleshooting downtime events and determine if die or process/machine problems.
  • Provide Kaizen suggestions to cross-functional teams.
  • Analyze process/equipment/tooling problems for long-term solutions.
  • Continuously improve assigned area processes.
  • Perform tooling testing as assigned.
  • Manage new capital purchases.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required.
  • Provide technical leadership and training to Die Maintenance Department.
  • Prepare die spare parts list and order components for new product launches.
  • Support first article inspection requirements for tooling, prototyping, and PPAP events.
  • Travel to outside vendors for tooling runoff as needed.
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Automated equipment troubleshooting experience in Die Casting Operations.
  • Experience in high volume manufacturing.
  • Capital procurement experience and grooming for production.
  • Casting process quality improvement experience.
  • Die Casting Mold Design and troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Safety oriented with good organizational and planning skills.
  • Product equipment and process knowledge.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with good interpersonal skills.
  • Proven problem-solving ability and mechanical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to analyze statistical data (Minitab experience a bonus).
  • Knowledge of IATF16949 requirements and close tolerance measurement.
  • High level math skills and part drawing interpretation.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends when needed.
  • Computer skills in Excel, Microsoft Word, Auto CAD LT, Oracle/ERP.
  • 3D Modeling Experience (Solidworks, CATIA, Inventor, etc.) and 3D CAM experience.
  • Physical agility to access equipment and ability to lift 60 lbs. on occasion.
  • Knowledge in GMAW (Mig), SMAW (Stick), and GTAW (TIG) welding practices.
  • Preventative Maintenance System experience.
  • Salary based on experience.
