About The Position

The Dialysis Technician II position at Avera involves performing technical skills related to fistulas, grafts, and Central Venous Catheters (CVC), including the initiation and termination of dialysis and dressing changes. The technician contributes to the maintenance of dialysis for patients requiring hemodialysis under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Responsibilities include identifying intradialytic comorbidities, monitoring patient and equipment alarms during treatment, and providing appropriate interventions. All facility staff must meet the qualifications and demonstrated competencies necessary to serve the comprehensive needs of dialysis patients.

Requirements

  • Technical Certificate.
  • Completion of Central Line Dialysis Technician Training Program.
  • Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) - Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) upon hire.
  • Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) - Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Understand water room equipment operation and function; complete testing and follow up on abnormal results.
  • Complete dialysis treatments, initiation and discontinuation from internal accesses and central lines.
  • Monitor vascular access function and report signs of stenosis, occlusion, or infection to RN.
  • Use aseptic technique to initiate and discontinue dialysis on stable patients utilizing CVC access.
  • Perform aseptic CVC dressing changes.
  • Assemble and prepare necessary treatment supplies, rinse and prime dialyzer, and attach and install required tubing.
  • Test and set parameters according to dialysis prescription.
  • Monitor equipment for safe and proper functioning, respond to alarms, and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Complete accurate documentation of dialysis access and patient treatment.
  • Observe patients during treatments and notify RN of any adverse reactions.
  • Respond to dialysis-related emergencies, seeking assistance from RN.
  • Provide technical assistance to nurses and follow their directions for hemodialysis treatments.
  • Participate in collaboration with patients, family, physicians, nursing staff, and ancillary departments.
