About The Position

The Hemodialysis Technician is responsible for direct patient care. Direct patient care includes performance of basic hemodialysis techniques and procedures, daily patient care and observations under the direct supervision and guidance of a registered nurse. This position is responsible for minimal water room testing. The Hemodialysis Technician will draw blood samples and prepare them for transport to the laboratory. This position is also responsible for performing both simple and complex laboratory tests as well as the required quality controls. The Hemodialysis Technician participates in quality improvement activities to maintain patient care standards. The technician reports directly to the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager as appropriate.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • 1+ year experience working as an acute care Patient Care Technician (PCT), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or 1+ year experience as acute care dialysis technician
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire (Required)

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Phlebotomy certification (Preferred)
  • Dialysis technician certification by CMS approved state certification program or national certification program (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Receives patient into the treatment area and performs patient data collection and documents appropriately in the EMR
  • Monitors and documents the status of vascular accesses using proper cannulation techniques in accordance with hospital vascular access procedure
  • Documents patient observations and seeks guidance when abnormalities are noted in patient’s parameters
  • Monitors and documents in EMR: patient’s vital signs, fluid therapy administration, and any other appropriate treatments performed.
  • Observe hospital policy and procedures for infection control and safety
  • Obtain blood samples per policy and procedure and appropriately send them to the laboratory
  • Sets up and monitors dialysis machines and reverse osmosis water system for correct functioning, responds to visual and audible alarms, and makes appropriate adjustments before, during, and after the dialysis treatment
  • Perform safety checks as directed by the registered nurse prior to, during, and following treatments
  • Reviews dialysis prescription and notes the physical and mental condition of the patient through observation and interview. Document observations appropriately in the EMR
  • Dismantles, cleans, and disinfects dialysis machines and other equipment according to hospital infection control policies and procedures
  • Obtains and sends water and machine cultures to designated lab
  • Notifies Biomedical Technician of any equipment malfunctions
  • Act as a role model and coach for other teammates
  • Performs clerical duties as needed which may include filing, answering phones, ordering supplies, copying, and faxing
  • Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission and vision of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
  • Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs.
