Position Summary: The Diagnostician is a critical member of the Student Services team responsible for implementing high-quality special education assessment processes. This role conducts comprehensive educational evaluations, assesses learning profiles, identifies student needs, and provides diagnostic information to guide appropriate programming and services. The Diagnostician collaborates closely with teachers, families, school leaders, and Student Services staff to ensure equitable access to supports and compliance with federal and state regulations.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education or related field preferred.
Wisconsin DPI Cross-Categorical Special Education license (1801) required.
Additional DPI licensure in Director of Special Education & Pupil Services (80) preferred.
Minimum 2–3 years of teaching or special education experience; experience conducting evaluations preferred.
Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, assessment tools, learning theory, and special education law.
Excellent communication, relationship-building, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Strong understanding of diverse learner needs and commitment to inclusive, data-driven practice.

Responsibilities

Support Carmen’s mission of inclusive, equity-centered education through high-quality assessment and diagnostic practices.
Contribute to a network vision that ensures all students—particularly those with disabilities—receive appropriate supports and access to rigorous instruction.
Serve as a specialist in evaluation, disability identification, and interpretation of learning needs across the school community.
Provide training, consultation, and guidance to teachers and staff about disability identification, student needs, and implementation of IEP-aligned supports.
Support instructional staff in understanding assessment data and applying it to classroom practice.
Support professional development related to inclusive instruction, accommodations, and differentiation based on evaluation findings.
Receive referrals and lead the special education assessment process from start to finish.
Select, administer, and interpret formal and informal assessments to determine eligibility in accordance with IDEA, ADA, Wisconsin DPI regulations, and Carmen policies.
Collect and organize assessment data including teacher input, cumulative file review, observations, interviews, and family insights.
Participate in IEP meetings as the evaluation expert, providing clear explanations of student strengths, needs, and required supports.
Ensure accurate, timely completion of evaluation reports, eligibility documentation, and IEP components.
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and district policies related to assessment, placement, and planning for special education services.
In partnership with the Senior Director of Student Services, create, maintain and manage the compliance system to ensure due dates and timelines are followed.
Partner with contracted service providers, school leaders, and the Senior Director of Student Services to ensure alignment and fidelity in student support systems.
Analyze assessment data and trends to continuously strengthen evaluation processes.
Collaborate with teachers to ensure accommodations and recommendations are implemented with fidelity.
Use diagnostic information to inform intervention planning, instructional decisions, and service provision.
Maintain organized records, reports, and documentation consistent with Carmen expectations for excellence.
Consult with teachers, administrators, and Student Services staff to support high-quality programming and problem-solving for students with disabilities.
Engage families as partners by clearly explaining evaluation procedures, results, and implications for instruction.
Build strong relationships with students and families grounded in empathy, transparency, and trust.
Collaborate with cross-campus and network-level teams to support consistent implementation of assessment practices.
