The Diagnostic Technician Apprentice is responsible for drawing blood, obtaining specimens, and transporting them to the laboratory. The role involves introducing oneself and positively identifying patients prior to specimen collection, instructing patients on proper specimen collection procedures, and ensuring that all applicable required lab forms are obtained at the time of service. The technician will also research unusual test requests, document necessary information in hospital information systems, and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as per department and hospital policy. Additionally, the technician assists with specimen collection and transportation, maintains harmonious relations with patients and staff, practices efficient use of laboratory supplies, participates in staff meetings, and maintains cleanliness in testing areas. The role also includes performing non-invasive cardiology testing, completing cardiac test ordering and billing, training other staff members, and handling specimen collection problems.
