About The Position

AKIVA is an AI-native engineering firm specializing in enterprise services, domain-specific solutions, and high-performance infrastructure from strategy through deployment. AKIVA is currently building a qualified bench of MRI Technologists to perform magnetic resonance imaging examinations for the Veterans served by the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. This position aligns with the VA ICSP Diagnostic Radiologic Technician definition (OPM series GS-0647) and is specifically scoped to the MRI modality. The work must be performed in accordance with VA policy, ACR MRI Accreditation Program requirements, ACR MR safety guidance, Joint Commission standards, 42 CFR Part 75 credentialing, and applicable California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch regulations.

Requirements

  • Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months (or equivalent) in a post-high-school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or another Department of Education–recognized accreditor (consistent with 42 CFR Part 75 credentialing)
  • Active ARRT(R) registration plus ARRT(MR) post-primary certification (or ARRT(MR) primary pathway), in good standing
  • Active California Department of Public Health Radiologic Health Branch (CRT) permit
  • Minimum of one (1) year of hospital or outpatient MRI clinical experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with PACS, RIS, and MRI acquisition/processing workstations (Siemens, GE, Philips, or equivalent)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Ability to obtain and maintain VA credentialing through VetPro and a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credential
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation (minimum Tier 1 / NACI) and meet all VA immunization, TB screening, and occupational health requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and a patient-centered orientation
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience at a VA Medical Center, DoD Military Treatment Facility, or Indian Health Service facility
  • Multi-modality ARRT certification (for example ARRT(R)(MR)(CT))
  • Experience with 3T imaging, breast MRI, cardiac MRI, or MR spectroscopy
  • Experience with CPRS, VistA Imaging, or Cerner Millennium
  • Experience supporting ACR MRI accreditation cycles or Joint Commission readiness
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, or Korean
  • Veteran status (AKIVA applies a Veteran hiring preference consistent with federal law)
  • Two or more years of dedicated MRI experience

Responsibilities

  • Perform adult and, as credentialed, pediatric MRI examinations across routine and advanced protocols (neuro, MSK, body, breast, cardiac, MRA/MRV, functional, spectroscopy)
  • Screen every patient, family member, and staff entrant for MR-unsafe and MR-conditional implants, foreign bodies, and contraindications prior to Zone III/IV entry
  • Enforce ACR MR safety zones (I–IV) and the facility MR Safety Program at all times; escalate any safety deviation to the MR Safety Officer
  • Prepare and position patients, verify identity using two identifiers, explain procedures, obtain informed consent when applicable, and coach patients through claustrophobia and long sequences
  • Administer gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) within scope of practice and facility policy; screen renal function (eGFR) and monitor for adverse reactions and extravasation
  • Optimize pulse sequences, coil selection, and acquisition parameters to produce diagnostic-quality images while minimizing scan time and SAR exposure
  • Capture, transmit, and archive images and study metadata through VA PACS, the Radiology Information System (RIS), CPRS, and VistA Imaging
  • Support scheduling, order reconciliation, and patient-flow coordination with Medical Support Assistants, nursing, and referring providers
  • Perform daily QA (SNR, geometric accuracy, table positioning, emergency systems) and flag equipment malfunctions through Biomedical Engineering
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, the VA Privacy Act, record retention, and VA Talent Management System (TMS) training requirements
  • Participate in ACR MRI accreditation cycles, MR safety drills, quality improvement, and peer review as requested
  • Deliver patient-centered, Veteran-focused care with cultural humility and sensitivity to service-connected conditions
