A caregiver in this role works evenings from 3:30 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. with holiday and weekend requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing
  • Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire
  • One certification within abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
  • Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
  • Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis.
  • Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam.
  • Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
  • Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
  • Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
  • Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
  • Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
  • Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
  • Complete after-hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
  • Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
  • Process billing via RIS.
  • Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
  • Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
  • Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.
  • Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols.
  • Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
  • Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations.
  • Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment.
  • Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums.
  • RDMS must be maintained and in good standing.
  • If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies.
