Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There are different kinds of imaging devices, this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections. A caregiver in this position works evenings| 2:30pm—11:00pm.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross

Responsibilities

  • Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
  • Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis.
  • Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
  • Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
  • Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
  • Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
  • Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
  • Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
  • Complete after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
  • Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
  • Process billing via RIS.
  • Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
  • Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
  • Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.
  • Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols.
  • Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
  • Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations.
