About The Position

In collaboration with patients, families (as defined by the patient) and staff across all disciplines and departments, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for performing diagnostic procedures on patients using ultrasound waves to examine tissue and body structure, providing quality images for interpretation. The role involves performing patient assessments, acquiring, and analyzing data obtained using ultrasound, and using independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care. The Sonographer provides a summary of findings to the physician or health care provider to aid in patient diagnosis and management and participates in CQI activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED with 2 years of experience; or Associate Degree; or Technical Certificate/Degree.
  • Minimum of three years of radiologic/imaging experience.
  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date (American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted).
  • At least one of the following certifications: Cardiographic Tech credentialed from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), Radiologic Technologist specializing in Sonography credentialed from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), Medical Sonographer credentialed from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) (Any ARDMS item accepted), or Medical Sonographer credentialed from the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Performs clinical assessment of the patient and conditions to select the appropriate equipment for the sonography examination based on established protocols.
  • Perform Two Patient Identifiers and complete hand hygiene.
  • Explains the test to the patient.
  • Instructs and assists the patient in assuming the physical position for examination.
  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure - makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures in accordance with infection control evidence-based practices.
  • Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the area to be examined, the depth of field and other specifications of test.
  • Uses independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic information.
  • Pull correct patient name from list on modality onto ultrasound equipment to maintain record of test results.
  • Moves transducer over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
  • Uses independent judgment to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
  • Records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting physician for diagnosing and archival purposes.
  • Analyzes sonogram, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Performs all quality control checks, as prescribed.
  • Maintains accurate QC logs, Audits service records, etc.
  • Understandsand practices proper use of all equipment; never operates equipment inconsistent with manufacturer's or lead person’s instruction.
  • Completes ultrasound exams at CommUnityCare Health Centers consistent with set policies and procedures.
  • Provides ultrasound call according to monthly schedule.
  • Assists with daily operation of the ultrasound department, including technical errors (i.e., interface), transcription of results as required, and report any concerns affecting workflow and patient safety.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general population.
  • Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support, and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.
