About The Position

The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) is an institution that represents 100 years of growth from a small school of veterinary medicine in 1916 to its present role as a major veterinary educational, medical, and research center. Today, we are one of the largest schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, training nearly 600 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students each year. The Diagnostic Laboratory Technician I performs routine diagnostic assays, assists in customer service, monitors computers for lab equipment and compiling data. May provide technical assistance in research projects in the area of small animal gastrointestinal function and disease

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a laboratory setting, experience with DNA Extraction and PCR.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine diagnostic procedures and assays, including fecal sample aliquoting, DNA extraction, IFA, and qPCR testing to evaluate gastrointestinal functionality in veterinary patients and provides technical support for research projects. Conducts data analysis and operates precision laboratory equipment, including NanoDrop, epMotion, qPCR machines, and Kingfisher Flex instruments.
  • Reports qPCR and IFA service results in the GILAB database with high accuracy on a daily basis to ensure the timely release of results and meet laboratory turnaround time goals. Maintains the Microbiome service master folder by accurately entering service data and quality control (QC) results daily.
  • Assists in processing research and commercial project samples, including sample aliquoting, DNA extraction, sample organization, and updating spreadsheets.
  • Assists in training Microbiome lab student technicians on technical skills and proper equipment operation.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure efficient laboratory function. Prepares DNA extraction bead tubes, reagents, and buffers. Operates the autoclave as required for routine diagnostic testing and sterilization.
